On this date last year...
"Protecting the privacy of others..."
Quick note about IDG.net...
A month or so ago, Acer Ginny got a call from one of her friends in the media -- Sumner Lemon -- who was doing an article about online journalists in Asia, so she rounded up a couple of us, including Jody Lin, to meet with him. Always thinking of others that girl Ginny (Very sweet! But man she must think an awful lot because she only knows half a million people...).
Anyway, to make a long story short... we're in the press!
The article, which will appear mostly in IDG's various print publications (PC World, Computer World, etc.), focuses on Jody Lin, and how she writes about VERY intimate and sometimes CONTROVERSIAL topics about her personal life here in Taipei as well as those around her, so controversial that a "hate thread" was even created on ORIENTED earlier this year.
Nice exposure for us, eh?
The most shocking piece of information is, of course, that Jody Lin does not really exist. Cat's out of the bag on this one.
And yeah, I know who the person is behind that blog. She's a friend of mine in Taipei, and yes, she (the real thing baby) has been mentioned here on my own site on a number of occasions... with photos! But, I promised not to tell, and like a good little girl, I didn't.
LOL!
Actually I've known for a very long time and have had to share her guilt of secrecy whenever her name came up ... "hey Christine do you know this girl Jody? She seems to frequent all the places we go to but no one seems to have ever met her before" ... "Umm, I'm not sure, I don't THINK so but my memory is so bad..."
Horrible.
And when I first found out, I COULDN'T BELIEVE IT. "Jody" even had to mention a certain event that we went to the night before on her site for me to absorb what I was hearing. And even when I read it on her site, it still took me several days for it to sink in. Not only is she not Jody, she is *THAT* girl!
LOL!
But, there are very good reasons why the writer uses an assumed name, due in no small part to the fact that many of the incidents are indeed very real. She has to protect her own privacy, as well as those in her circle, no? And yet she should write about it for others to read, in my humble opinion. It's a FANTASTIC take on what life is really like for so many of us in Taiwan.
I could never get away with that on my site.
Plus, her writing style is absolutely amazing. She is one very talented person, that girl "Jody", and her blog is the perfect medium for her to indulge in those talents.
By the way, Sumner's name KICKS ASS! I love it!
More in a bit...
