On this date last year...
"Jesus Christ Oh Mighty!"
Gus stopped by again today to give me signatures on a document that should complete the termination of the relationship between ORIENTED.ORG and the Ltd. company that we set up many years ago here in Taiwan.
The Ltd. has been in "inactive" status for well over a year now (maybe even two years, can't remember...), but now that we have decided once and for all that we won't be commercializing .ORG, it is time to clean house and eliminate whatever "official" ties that bind us to the activities of the website.
FIVE MINUTES prior to Gus' arrival, I get a call from Dan Nystedt, staff reporter of the Taipei Times. He wants to do an interview about ORIENTED for the Q&A section of their Monday publication, as in, THIS COMING MONDAY.
Now how the heck are we going to pull THIS ONE off?!
All I can do is LOL!
On the one hand, we would LOVE the opportunity to be featured in the Taipei Times. We've just never had the resources (i.e., someone to effectively manage PR) to appropriately build relations with the local media, so whatever exposure we've gotten previously has always been random at best (which translates to - publications contacted us at the last minute because they needed an article...).
On the OTHER hand... the timing could not have been more awkward.
Even just trying to schedule the interview with Dan was comical, with my fumbling on the phone, telling him I'd talk to Gus first and call him right back. I talk to Gus and we decide that this is just really bad timing, so Gus calls Dan back to see if we can postpone but ends up fumbling himself (while I laughed at him on the side watching his facial expressions, lol...) because Dan NEEDS to do it this weekend for whatever reason. So then Gus tells him that he needs to talk to me about this AGAIN and that we'll call him back AGAIN. So then *I* called Dan back, at which time I fumbled AGAIN while Gus snickered at ME on the side.
SO STUPID!
LOL!
The end result was that we agreed to do the interview this weekend for Monday's publication ONLY on the condition that we get to read the draft prior to it going to print, for the sole purpose of ensuring that what is printed does not inadvertently mislead anyone about our future intentions.
Dan agreed.
No matter what, we have a responsibility to our site visitors and want to make sure that they are appropriately informed about our plans, that which we aren't quite ready to announce just yet.
I would have given anything to have had my camera with me when the two of us each took turns talking to Dan on the phone. It was just too funny. By the time we were done, we both looked at each other and gasped, "When did this get to be so complicated?!" and then busted out laughing.
We're meeting him for lunch on Saturday, his cameraman is going to be coming to take pictures of us, and I'm going to be taking pictures of DAN!
It doesn't get any funnier than this...
"About last night..."
A quick note about my meeting last night with Linda at TYA.
'Twas a productive meeting per usual and lasted until almost 10:00 p.m. We were both pretty wiped by the end of it but we finally put together the final designs and functionality of the ORIENTED Community Events Calendar and this is how I feel about it in my best Southern drawl:
I just luuuuuuuuuv it!
There are thousands of online events calendars out there but none nearly as user-friendly or useful or SEXY as this one will be! Some people may say, "Christine chill out... it's just CALENDAR for Christ's sakes..." but you know what?
That's what they said about my (fill in the blank) as well, and hey. This is not just ANY events calendar. It's the ORIENTED Events Calendar.
There's a difference.
So that's that.
Let's hope we can get it up and running by the end of next week. Meanwhile, I'm off to see Diana Krall this evening... cool beans.
