On this date last year...
"Bill Ko, guilty as charged..."
Throughout my adult life I have always been attracted to computer programmers and engineers, not just because they can help me fix my computers when they break (lol...) but because I've always admired their approach to solving problems, i.e., with diligence, creativity, confidence, and a tremendous degree of tenacity... qualities I most admire.
Unlike salesmen (who must travel often to "visit" people...) or lawyers (who turn every little conversation into a righteous, contextual battle...) or doctors (whose schedules are never in order...) or consultants (who travel frequently AND make no sense AND have crazy schedules...), computer geeks like to stay put and are relatively easily entertained. Just put a broken PC in front of them and PRESTO! They're happy campers and thus, so am I.
... or so I thought.
So today, knowing that Bill was going to continue working on the ORIENTED machine (and after learning my lesson from yesterday.. ahem...), I waited until dinner time to give him a ring, as the agreement was that I would buy him dinner in exchange for him helping me.
Since I needed a video card and a network card (Bill's been using his own to test run the computer), we stopped by Aurora as seen in the above photo and picked them up before heading off to Chili's for dinner (which by the way, has good food, good prices, and great service!).
Like a little kid, Bill opened up the video card box just as soon as we ordered our food and throughout the entire evening kept exclaiming, "Aren't you excited about getting your new computer?!" Not wanting to hurt his feelings I nodded emphati-
cally but couldn't help but think that HE was the one excited over here... ahem!
Anyway, he wanted to rush back to his place right after dinner to install the new video card and show me how "powerful" it was so the first thing I said before we even left the restaurant was this:
"Now Bill. I just KNOW that you are going to end up tinkering with the computer FOREVER and ignoring me all the while so if you could just set me up on your LAPTOP so that I can get some work done -- plus I really want to get caught up with my journal entries -- that would be great, ALRIGHT?"
His response was, "I just need a few minutes to install the video card and then you can type up your journal entries on your *own* computer, 'k?"
Three hours later -- after quietly watching an entire MOVIE by myself in the living room area -- I finally snuck up behind him to see what he was doing and *gasped* when I looked up at the monitor:
Busted.
Guilt written all over his face, Bill said, "Dude! Your video card works GREAT!"
And unfortunately for me... this is a true story.
Perhaps I need to reconsider my love for computer programmers and how they fit into the whole scheme of things as I have so eloquently defined above.
Anyway, I have been told recently that some people are starting to speculate about the nature of my friendship with Bill. To that I say, "Good luck, have fun, and let me know what you come up with!"
LOL!
