in flight to Philadelphia

"I give up..."

I tried and I tried and I tried to fall asleep during this red-eye flight to the East Coast, but... it just ain't happening.

So, here I am, going into the third hour, I think.

I would talk about ORIENTED, but errr... I'm kind of lightheaded at the moment due to lack of sleep or water or both, one of the many reasons why I hate flying, so I'll just ramble about something else instead.

(Oh great...)

It's kind of strange to be flying out on the redeye, I guess because I'm not used to it. I spent the day not working but rather, doing everything else I could think of to avoid packing until the very last minute... organizing my personal files... going to Starbucks... rearranging my clothes... trying on outfits for the New Year's bash that we are planning to go to... I even vaccuumed the apartment!!

I have no idea why I have such adverse reactions to packing and flying!

Anyway, Nelson and Quynh were kind enough to take me to the airport and picked me up exactly at 8:00 p.m. (on time per usual), and thank goodness I got myself a bagel with cream cheese at the airport lounge because apparently, I am not going to get fed on this flight and I kind of forgot to eat today.

(Oh great...)

Might as well elaborate on the gathering at Eric's house last weekend while I have this chance!

In coming back to the U.S. and trying to get myself settled, I haven't made it a point to formally ANNOUNCE my return in hopes that I could just slide in and do my thing unnoticed, as a lot of people I know offline don't know about this online journal (since I stopped promoting it awhile back) but obviously some of my online friends (as well as readers I have never met!) knew I was back so I did get a handful of "welcome back and let's get together sometime!" upon my arrival.

Naturally, when I found out that Eric was inviting RBJ journalists to his home to watch/listen to Vienna Teng perform, I was like... perfect opportunity to kill ALL those birds with just one stone!

Terrible I know, but what can I do?!

I'll get to see Eric and Adam again (Birds #1 and #2), I'll get to meet Vienna (Bird #3), and I'll drag Benboy out (Bird #4!) so that I can see him, as well! There were many other birds on the guest list too, including Dardy whom I have emailed with a few times but never met before, and Raymond who I believe was the first of the RBJ members to drop me a line to welcome me back to the U.S.

Meeting Vienna was the bonus for the evening as I had been following her career change and website on and off for the last year or so, mainly due to the terrific help that Eric and Adam have been giving her to raise exposure (literally!) to her work. Those guys are really great to use the web like that to support their good friend. Hmmm... reminds me of... well gee! But I digress... so I was delighted at this opportunity to finally get to meet her in person.

And guess what.

She is really cool.

Down-to-earth, thoughtful, mature, confident, well-spoken, and kind. All of which comes out in her music and in her presentation style. I don't know how much of an expert I am in the technique of her music so much as I that I greatly admire her for her decision to leave her job at Cisco to do what she enjoys doing most. Takes a lot of guts to do that.

So kudos to Vienna!

And kudos to Eric as well, for arranging this gathering and inviting all of us to his house.

Eric is one of those people who seems to have it all -- brains, looks (you know I was going to say that, lol!), musical talents, supportive family, different interests, and lots of good friends, not to mention the fact that he is a very well-mannered and humble person.

That he puts it all to good use, regularly inviting people (and different groups of people at that) to his place to meet each other like he did that evening, perform music together, eat together, or just hang out, is I think, the coolest thing about the guy. Obviously I don't know him that well (though I feel like I do since we've been online friends since March 2001), but I really like that he is so generous in that way, as there are many people in this world who have what he has but who would never take the time to do what he does for others.

Nice guy. =)

Anyway, enough about Eric least I make myself and my audience throw up.

Not the purpose of this journal entry.

We're almost landing so I better wrap this up (man, writing a journal entry is a great way to pass the time on an airplane!)

Last thing I wanted to say is that unfortunately, I didn't get to meet everyone who attended the event but will hopefully get to do so some other time. It used to be -- and my close friends reading this will nod and frown emphatically -- that I would show up at these functions and literally FLY across the room to try and talk with every single person there (it's that "Bird" theme I got goin' on here...).

Partly to meet people, partly because I hate to see anyone by themselves.

But over the years, I have learned that that is just pointless, and that I am better off sitting down and spending time getting to know a few people than to only get to say "HI!" and "BYE!" to all of them.

See?

Now you know why I had to "elaborate on this later".

MAN CAN I BABBLE.

Headed home for the holidays... more soon.
